Generative engine optimization
What is GEO?
Search is starting to answer instead of list. GEO is about being in that answer — correctly.
GEO (generative engine optimization) is the practice of making a business visible, correctly understood, and citable inside AI-generated answers — the prose responses from assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. Where SEO works on where you rank in a list of links, GEO works on whether an AI system includes you when it answers a question — and whether it describes and cites you accurately.
Why it exists now
The answer replaced the list.
People used to type keywords and get ten blue links to choose from. Now they describe what they need in a sentence and get one composed answer — often naming a few specific businesses, and often without a click. If you're not in that answer, you're not on the shortlist. GEO is the work of earning a place there.
Where it sits
SEO, AEO, GEO — three questions, one goal.
They overlap more than they compete. The same underlying clarity, structure, and authority feed all three — which is why Rubricks treats them as one problem, not three services.
The core idea
You can't control the AI answer. You can control what it has to work with.
No one can dictate what a model says, and the interfaces keep changing. What lasts is the information layer underneath every assistant: how clearly you describe what you do, whether the right page can be retrieved, and whether credible evidence exists to trust the answer. GEO is the discipline of improving that durable layer — then checking whether the answers actually change.
What GEO actually works on
Four things that decide whether you're in the answer.
Can systems tell who you are and what you do?
Can the right service or page be retrieved?
Is there credible evidence to trust the answer?
Did better discovery produce better business?
Where it breaks
Being recommended is a chain — and any link can break.
A model has to find evidence of you, know who you are, connect you to the right service and place, put you on the shortlist, and then recommend and cite you correctly. GEO diagnoses which link is actually failing before fixing anything — because producing more content won't help if the break is somewhere else.
